(The AEGIS Alliance) – A former police officer from London, England who used his position to exploit and abuse women throughout his career, was sentenced on Tuesday. He was found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting 12 victims over a period of nearly 20 years.
An ex-officer of the London Metropolitan Police, David Carrick, was given a life sentence in connection to one of the most horrific cases involving a law enforcement official, according to AP News. During the sentencing hearing, Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb denounced Carrick for using his badge as a way to deceive and manipulate his victims.
“You brazenly raped and sexually assaulted a number of women, some very brutally, and you behaved as if you were untouchable,” Cheema-Grubb said to Carrick.
“You were bold and at times relentless, trusting that no victim would overcome her shame and fear to report you,” she added.
Justice Bobbie Cheema-Grubb continued, “For nearly two decades, you were proved right but now a combination of those 12 women, by coming forward, and your police colleagues, by acting on their evidence, have exposed you and brought you low.”
Carrick’s sentencing follows his recent admission of being a serial rapist in a court of law. In the previous month, he had acknowledged his guilt in 49 charges, including 24 counts of rape, as well as other offenses such as assault, attempted rape, and false imprisonment.
Carrick became a police officer in 2001 and committed his crimes over a span of 17 years, from 2003 to 2020. It was only after a rape complaint led to his arrest in 2021 that he was suspended from his duties.
The Metropolitan Police Department of London has expressed regret to the victims and made an apology, acknowledging the devastating impact that Carrick’s actions have had on the police force.
On Tuesday, Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley offered another apology.
“David Carrick’s crimes were unspeakably evil. He exploited his position as a police officer in the most disgusting way,” Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated. “I want to again reiterate my apology on behalf of the Met. We are truly sorry.”
