Customs Makes ‘Second Largest’ Meth and Fentanyl Bust Along Southwest Border

(The AEGIS Alliance) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized over 3,100 pounds of illicit drugs from a semi-truck that was reportedly transporting medical supplies into California from Mexico. The bust marks the “second largest” methamphetamine seizure at the southwest border, according to a press release by officials on Sunday.

Along with meth, agents also seized an enormous amount of fentanyl powder and pills and heroin. The drugs were all mingled together with medical products including spray bottles and plastic pipette tips, the agency said.

The massive drug bust happened at the San Diego cargo border Otay Mesa on Friday morning.

A citizen of Mexico, age 47 was driving the vehicle and has been arrested and handed over to federal immigration officials. The male suspect is expected to face criminal charges.

Agents with the CBP scanned the suspect’s tractor-trailer with an imaging system that works like an x-ray and discovered “anomalies” in the rear area of the truck. The trailer was transported to the dock where a drug-sniffing dog alerted officials to boxes hidden within the vehicle.

The massive amount of meth and other heavy drugs that officials found inside the truck are estimated to be worth about $7.2 million, a press release from CBP said.

“This massive seizure is a testament of what law enforcement agencies can do when we combine forces — prevent over $7 million worth of deadly drugs from entering our country; thus saving countless lives from addiction and overdose deaths,” John Callery said, a special agent with the DEA.

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect.
