(The AEGIS Alliance) – A woman who was homeless in Oregon died while her nearly $900,000 inheritance sat waiting for her in a state bank, KGW reported.
49-year-old Cathy Boone had been homeless while she was living in Astoria, Oregon prior to her death earlier this year in January. Jack Spithill, her father, informed KGW that Boone was going through a tough time during her adult life.
“I attribute it almost all to drugs, but I think she also had some mental health issues and the combination of the two didn’t work out for her very well,” Spithall said to KGW.
But in 2016, following her mother passing away, she fell back into her addiction and relapsed into having problems with drug abuse, Spithall added that Boone hadn’t been keeping in touch with her friends or family during that time.
Representatives who managed her mother’s estate made a number of attempts to reach Boone, however, their efforts failed. Then, in 2019, Boone’s $884,407 inheritance fund had been moved to the Oregon Department of State Lands, KGW pointed out.
“It just didn’t make any sense to me,” Jack Spithill said. “That money was just sitting there, and she needed help in the worst way.”
“Given a year and a half of effort taken by the personal representative and the attorney for this particular estate, there really isn’t much more the state could do,” Claudia Ciobanu, an Oregon State Lands representative informed KGW. “This is a unique case and we sympathize with the family.”
Last October, the Department of State Lands issued $884,000 into Cathy Boone’s estate, and also her representatives are making efforts to establish who is going to be given the money, KGW reported.
