2 brothers in New Hampshire have been locked into a tradition of regifting the exact same box of hard candies to each other for the last 34 years.
The problematic tradition began in 1987 when Ryan Wasson gifted his brother, Eric, “Santa’s Box of Candy” along with 10 various rolls, even while understanding that Eric did not like them.
“I didn’t eat them,” Eric Wasson said to WMUR. “And so the next year I thought, ‘Hey, I think I’m going to give it back to him. He’ll never remember.'”
Of course, Ryan instantly realized it was the same box of candy. Ryan noted that the same Rite Aid sticker label was actually still on the back of the box.
Almost every year since then, the same candy box has been regifted to each other. While understanding they have a gift for each other might have alleviated some holiday season worry, rather, the siblings have included even more stress in their holiday plans by making an effort to one-up one another in terms of creative thinking.
During one of those years, the candy box was encased in ice and frozen solid. A different year, it was placed into Jell-O. Then during 2007, Ryan even received the help of a neighborhood sheriff’s department to get in on the joke. In 2020, Eric was gifted the candy box from a waitress at a neighborhood dining establishment.
“Neither one of us will give up because we’re brothers,” Ryan said. “We can never give up. If you ask which one has ever done the best as far as giving these, we’re both going to say it’s ourselves. We’re never going to give in.”
